And trusting her. We have marveled at her courage and curiosity. Diane Sawyer believes "being safe is the enemy of everything" and that great experience takes place at the edge of your competence. "Because," she says, "in that beautiful anxiety is an air pocket of what youve always done and what you might do; that is your creative life."

She began her career as a Kentucky beauty queen and took over ABC World News three years ago, at age 64. When I asked her if I could print that, she laughed and said, "Print it," because Diane Sawyer has things to concern herself with other than being coy about her age. Yet one of our most trusted journalists wears running shoes and sweats to work, hoping she will get that workout in. She knows myriad versions of Leonard Cohens "Hallelujah" and has been happily married to director Mike Nichols for 25 years. She saved a note that her mother wrote to her after hearing about Nicholss film The Graduate, saying shed heard that "it changes the way you think." There is no doubt that Sawyer has inspired countless others to change the way they think.

RITA WILSON: Who have you always wanted to interview?

DIANE SAWYER: The popeeither the outgoing or the incoming.

RW: Oh, thats good.

DS: I feel I will not get that interview.

RW: Is that your intuition?

DS: Thats my...[laughs] certainty.

RW: Youve interviewed people from Ahmadinejad to Obama, Britney Spears to Castro. Was there a story that you felt most affected by?

DS: Its always the last one. Going in, I always think, Well, this is going to be difficult, or this is going to be something that I have to construct. And then I go in and it happens, and its outside of everything you prepare for.

RW: Can you give an example?

DS: I think when Whitney Houston was doing that somewhat famous interview, she was learningshe was saying it for the first time.

RW: "Crack is whack."

DS: And in a much more profound way, the teacher I interviewed right after [the massacre in] Newtown. She started talking, and she hadnt talked about what had happened to her that day, about being in the bathroom with the 15 children, stacking them on top of each other and telling them she loved them, because she wanted those to be the last words they heardif they were the last words. And you could see her discovering what it was that had happened as she was talking....

RW: Thats one I still cant shake.

DS: That was punishingly hard. And its not about me, and it was not about us, but simply to be there, where its pitched way past grief. Its as tough as it gets. Thats from a poem, by the way. "Pitched past the pitch of grief." Thats not me; its Gerard Manley Hopkins.

RW: I love it. Youve done some tough emotional pieces. How do you brace yourself for emotionally trying topics?

DS: You know, I always assume that they want something to change or they wouldnt be talking. That lifts the burden. The storys there for the purpose they want it to serve, and Im listening for that. Whats going to give it meaning is how their words change the way people feel or act.

RW: Have you ever taken the toll of an interview home with you?

DS: Lots of times. When you come back from overseas, and you see the immensity of the suffering, and you realize that youre just one story, and that no matter how you try to fire it like a rocket into the world, it is not going to change what theyll wake up to tomorrow. It can take days before you rally emotionally.

RW: But after an interview like Gabby Giffords?

DS: Well, youve seen her. Somebody wrote me this beautiful note that said, "Whatever part of the brain controls the human spirit, the bullet missed." And Jaycee Dugardher courage! Her little flower planted in that backyard for all those years. Looking at the moon, with the absolute certainty that her mother was on the other side looking at the moon too. How can you not come back and believe that human beings are capable of infinite wonder and bravery?

RW: Speaking of Jaycee Dugard and her incredible intuition, are there any instances where your own intuition has been dead-on?

DS: Well...meeting Mike.

RW: Did you know when you met him?

DS: I justI knew before he spoke, I knew before he was walking across the room. I knew something was happening [laughs], and maybe its that beautiful hallmark. Cue the violins? But I knew life was changing.

RW: When you started in politics, you worked in the Nixon administration, and now youre looking at Washington from the other side of the lens. How has the political landscape changed since you were there?

DS: The big change is that its not just 24 hours anymore. Its the nanosecond coverage of everything, and that theyve got to jump faster than people can think and try to answer things like Pac-Man is coming their way. I remember Robert Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis, and the 13 days they had to ponder what they were going to do. Can you imagine having 13 days anymore?

RW: No. You really dont have time to think. But youre good on your feet, Diane! You once said that being a beauty queen taught you to think on your feetand I loved that, because I dont have that quality at all.

DS: Its just a muscle, you know? Its the muscle that says, "Say what you think you think," and worry later about all of its accommodations, because what you think you think is often truer than what comes from the composition. Now, mind you, it can also get you thrown off television!

RW: [Laughs] Do you view yourself as a role model for women?

DS: I dont think that way. I hope that some longevity will be a signal to men and women. I love women in the workplace; I love seeing women in television news accumulate all of this strength, and muscle, and power. And I love the men wanting to go home and be with their families at night. But I think a certain kind of stamina is central for everyone starting out. In January we saw Hillary Clinton, at the end of this tenure, go up and kick some ass, and be indignant at the sense of perspective and proportion and posturing that she has to live with. The questions may be good, but we know the difference between questioning and posturing [laughs], and to see that reactionit was a warrior moment.

RW: Youre so incredibly respectedm sure this doesnt happen the way it does for some peoplebut have you ever been insulted in an interview?

DS: No. No one can insult me in interviews. But people have certainly said things. Ahmadinejad, for example, said I should be asking him about romance and not what I was asking about....

RW: [Gasps] Did he say that?

DS: Yes, he did. [Laughs] And Admiral Rickover, founder of the nuclear navy, said, "Its not that Im so smart; its that youre so dumb." So part of that just gets my pulse revved. My job is to be able to handle whats thrown at me in interviews. In life, though, it happens much more than people expect. I think that were all walking around with our shirts buttoned up high so people dont see the bruises.

RW: That is so true.

DS: But the thing that amazes me, the more I live, is how little of what you perceive is intended. So you want forever to be exploringto be as wise as you can be about what was intended, before you react. Ive never understood that phrase "Nothing is personal." Ive heard Oprah say it, and I try really hard to understand it, but so much feels personal.

RW: Yeah.

DS: And I wonder if what its about is giving people a chance to be on your side. I remember Mike said to me, after our first argument, "Well, I know youre fair, I know you love me, so I have to consider the possibility that youre right."

RW: Oooooh, thats so good. I love that.

DS: That, in most of our lives, will apply: Well, I know I have to consider the possibility that youre right.

RW: What did you think about the faux controversy of your election-night spirit, and how do you deal with being in the limelight, for better or worse?

DS: I laughed, believe me. Thirty years on television. ?... I really laughed.

RW: Do you think that journalists are held to unfair standards?

DW: Were all in a world where these viral events can skew, or seem to skew, an entire career. And were better than that; we all know better than that, and its awful to see the politicians, the people running for office, so paralyzed with caution, because caution is also the enemy of vitality.

RW: I agree.

DS: People should be able to tell a joke that lands badly [laughs] without it having to be a five-day referendum on their character.

RW: Whats the most nerve-racking part of your job?

DS: Probably the unrelenting nature of most days. We live in a simultaneous world of the stories that were reporting for six months, and the stories that come across the wire where you have to jump, so youre living in three dimensions, and it doesnt stopwhich is also the most wonderful part of the day. Its adrenalizing, and adrenaline is addicting, and thats why were therewe like it, we need it, we want to know.

RW: That is true.

DS: So its stressful, but I think stress with possibilities and hope has a different effect on the body than stress from being trapped or in despair.

RW: Yes.

DS: Stress is a form of daring. Look at the longest-lived people you know. They are two kindsthey are the people who live in the village that has no telephone, and the people whove been out there every day, pushing forward. I dont think we know the final verdict on stress in the body.

RW: I read somewhere that you love sad songs. Why is that?

DS: I have no idea.

RW: What do they do to you physically?

DS: They...make the world less abrasive. They cure human loneliness. They quiet your anxieties. All that bouncy, lets-have-fun music makes me anxious! [Laughs] Ive always wondered in part if it was high school and being so tall and so weird still weird, somewhat less tall. But whether it was not having dates the way people had dates or boyfriends the way people had boyfriends, maybe thats where I found my sanctuary.

RW: Do you have any kind of preshow tradition?

DS: No. I have a hair-and-makeup team thats been with me for years, and a wardrobe person. She comes in and says, "You have tomato juice on your shirt; Im getting you a new shirt."

RW: [Laughs] Lets talk about your wardrobe.

DS: As you know, my clothes sense is basically, as Gilda Radner said, Whats the least itchy?

RW: I cannot agree with youyou have extraordinary style! Youve been named and listed on lists.... Do you have a uniform that works for you?

DS: You are looking at it.

RW: Okay, so black shirt and black pants?

DS: Black jeans, black shirt. Its one of the great joys: uncomplicating your life. If you want to keep the propulsion, you cant have all that complication anymore. Youve gotta be like an arrow. And you realize that the greatest power comes from beingfeeling the most like yourself.

RW: If you had not become a journalist, what would you have done?

DS: I used to think I would teach, but Im not sure anymore. I think I would probably still be wandering the world and looking for answers. I wouldnt be harnessed to anything the way I am now, but I would be out there asking questions.

RW: You probably did that as a kid, didnt you?

DS: Yes. I also loved getting lost as a kid.

RW: Really?

DS: Still doand I have a facility for it [laughs], which is nice. I love to go into a city and get completely lost.

RW: Physically lost?

DS: Physically lost. I have done it my whole lifego out there and just see what happens.

Read more: Diane Sawyer Interview - Diane Sawyer Quotes on Her Career Highlights - Harpers BAZAAR

From ritawilson.com
Fri, 15 Mar 2013 11:10:00 -0700http://ritawilson.com/news/136881Rita Guest Stars on Season 2 Premiere of GIRLS

On the second season of the buzzed-about, Emmy-nominated HBO series, Rita is slated to appear as Marnies mom.

When asked about the similarities between her Allison Williams rigid, Type-A character, Wilson wouldnt say much -- although she did warn everyone to expect some "outrageous" moments.

returns to HBO on Sunday, January 13th at 9PM. In the early 70s Ms. Wilson, now 55, was attending Hollywood High School. She was a decade younger than musicians like Jimmy Webb and Jackson Browne, who appear on her album, along with Sheryl Crow and Faith Hill. On a gentler echo of the sound and style of albums by Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff and Nicolette Larson, Ms. Wilson sings 14 personal favorites, most of them hits from the 1960s and 70s.

An unpretentious singer with a sweet, steady voice, Ms. Wilson lacks the forceful delivery of Ms. Ronstadt but imbues everything she touches with the kind of plaintive, unvarnished simplicity and understatement associated with Alison Krauss, who has a purer voice. There is not a forced or flat note. Fred Mollins production, with its spare arrangements and creamy strings, is in perfect step with Ms. Wilsons appealing vocals.

The opening cut, All I Have to Do Is Dream, sung with the rocker Chris Cornell, establishes the albums mood of fond remembrance. The songs from the late 50s and 60s, like Walking in the Rain, Never My Love and Come See About Me, tend to be hopeful and innocent, and those from the 70s, like Faithless Love and Good Time Charlies Got the Blues, more careworn and disillusioned.

The best point of comparison between then and now is the classic Eric Kaz and Libby Titus torch song Love Has No Pride, which was memorably recorded by Ms. Ronstadt, who wailed it; Bonnie Raitt, who toughened it up; and Rita Coolidge, who crooned it. Ms. Wilsons version is quieter and less fraught than its forerunners and distills the albums retrospective attitude of looking back from a point of grown-up serenity. The view is lovely.

STEPHEN HOLDEN

From ritawilson.com
Tue, 15 May 2012 09:50:00 -0700http://ritawilson.com/news/79501Rita on VH1's Big Morning Buzz
Check out Rita's interview on VH1's Big Morning Buzz this morning!

Get More: Big Morning Buzz Live

From ritawilson.com
Thu, 10 May 2012 12:25:00 -0700http://ritawilson.com/news/78091Rolling Stone Reviews AM/FM

From RollingStone.com:

By James Hunter

Sensuous U.S. radio hits from the Sixties and Seventies have a surprisingly able proponent in Rita Wilson, the L.A.-born actress and producer who debuts as a singer with this collection. You don't want to be that person who's like, 'Oh yeah, and now I'm a singer... And yet, here I am, I guess."

Wilson, who's acted in nearly 30 films and produced "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and the film adaptation of "Mama Mia!," releases her debut album, "AM/FM," on May 8. It's the result of a turn as Roxie Hart in "Chicago" on Broadway during the summer of 2006 that she says "reignited the love that I have for music" and led to subsequent discussions about future musical projects with Decca Records A&R exec Jay Landers -- including a musical built around songs from the 60s and 70s.

"He asked me if I sang," Wilson, who's married to Academy Award-winning actor/director/producer Tom Hanks, tells Billboard.com, "and I said,'Yeah...' Then he said, 'Have you ever recorded anything?' I sent him two things I had recorded... and Jay said, 'Well, we can do the play, but would you ever considering doing an album?' That's how it started, and it was kind of scary. But sometimes you have to scare yourself in order to make things happen and grow, I guess."

"AM/FM" features Wilson's takes on a variety of songs by the Everly Brothers ("All I Have to Do is Dream"), the Association ("Cherish"), Glen Campbell ("Wichita Lineman"), Joni Mitchell ("The River"), the Supremes ("Come See About Me" and more. Conceptually, she says the 11-song set hearkens back to her youth. "The songs I selected reminded me of what I heard on the radio, AM or FM," Wilson explains. "The AM stuff are things I remember my parents playing, either in the car or on the HiFi at home. Then FM radio came into existence...and I had my own car and full control of the dial. The AM section represents all this hope, giddiness, romance, joy, then the singer-songwriters came around for the FM side and were like, 'Yeah, that didn't quite work out, and let me tell you this little story about it...' "

Wilson also recorded good friend Patti Scialfa's unreleased "Every Perfect Picture" as an iTunes bonus track for "AM/FM." Scialfa co-produced that song, as well as "Come See About Me" for the album. "I'm her biggest fan," Wilson says. "That's a song she's had for many years, and I've always loved it. Whenever I see her, I'm like, 'Can you sing 'Every Perfect Picture?' I've tired to get other people I know who are big recording artists to record it. Then I had this window and I asked, and she said yes. So I was very honored and excited to record it. I guess it's like my XM song."

Scialfa and Sheryl Crow, another Wilson pal, guest on a pair of songs each on "AM/FM," along with Jackson Browne ("Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues"), Chris Cornell ("All I Have to Do is Dream") and Vince Gill ("Faithless Love"). But the real coupe, she says, was having Jimmy Webb play piano on his "Wichita Lineman." "My producer (Fred Mollin) had coincidentally produced some of Jimmy's albums, and after we knew I wanted to cut 'Wichita Lineman' he said, 'Maybe I should get Jimmy to come in and play piano on this,' " Wilson recalls. "I said, 'Are you joking?' 'No, I'll ask him,' and Jimmy said sure. He happened to be in L.A., so we got together and it was the first song we cut. He was so gracious and amazing, I still can't believe it."

Wilson has lined up shows in New York (May 10) and Los Angeles (June 9) to promote "AM/FM." But Wilson isn't prediction whether music will become a going concern amidst her film and TV projects and writing for Harper's Bazaar and the Huffington Post. "This is all kind of new to me," she notes. "I will continue doing music; whether or not I do another album, we'll see. I just hope people will like what they hear and I'll get to do it again, because (music) is something I really love to do."

From ritawilson.com
Mon, 07 May 2012 15:40:00 -0700http://ritawilson.com/news/77071Every Mother Counts 2012

Rita is one of a handful of artists featured on this year's "Every Mother Counts 2012" album benefiting the charity started by Christy Turlington Burns. Every Mother Counts teamed up with Starbucks to exclusively sell the album at participating locations during the month of May.

Thirteen of the 19 tracks are previously unreleased from artists including Paul Simon, Eddie Vedder, and Coldplay.

Make sure to pick up a copy the next time you're at Starbucks grabbing a Skinny Vanilla Latte!

From ritawilson.com
Fri, 04 May 2012 16:05:00 -0700http://ritawilson.com/news/76461AM/FM Now Streaming on Spotify!

Spotify is now streaming AM/FM in full as well as track by track commentary! I thought I can't really not do this. The album [titled AM/FM, on Decca Records] is cover songs from the '60s to the '70s. It reminds me of when I was a kid, driving in the car with my parents. Remember the songs you listened to when you were in the backseat and you didn't have control of the radio but your parents did? Back in those days, it was AM only. When I got my driver's license, it shifted to FM and singer-songwriter stuff rock. The AM songs all had such a beautiful idealized innocence, and as you get into the '70s and the singer-songwriter and the more mature songs of that era, it became more about the disillusionment of that ideal. The reality of human beings' complexities and flaws sort of took over.....Read the rest of the article.

From ritawilson.com
Fri, 16 Mar 2012 18:40:00 -0700http://ritawilson.com/news/66671
